Pitch

Set Up

It’s the year 2067 and having a clone is relatively common place, at the age of 18 you can apply to have one that will carry out menial tasks for you. Clones are grown from a person’s DNA and are ‘born’ as a perfect copy of that person, with an identifying code on the back of the neck. The clones are not as smart as humans and do not feel emotion & therefore border on autistic tendencies when it comes to interacting with humans. This film explores what happens when a clone evolves to have more human-like characteristics and poses questions about the ethics of these clones.

Act I – House, Pub

The plot is centred on three characters: Ben, Benjamin and Kate. Benjamin is Ben’s clone and they get along quite well. Ben and Kate are in a relationship and things have been going quite well, the beginning of the film would show this. Kate has a distain for clones and after a while she snaps at Benjamin and wants Ben to get him out of the house, this sparks an argument between Ben and Kate, which gets heated and Ben storms out of the house and goes to the pub.

Act II – Park, House, Police Station

Ben comes to in his car, near a park, in the early hours of the morning with cuts on his hands and blood up his arms. He can’t remember how he got there and can only remember going into the pub after the argument and ordering his drink. When he gets back home he finds Kate dead on the floor. After getting over the shock and the crying, he remembers Benjamin and rushes upstairs. Benjamin’s door is locked and he yells at Benjamin to open the door. Benjamin opens the door and has a few bruises and cuts on his face and head. Leading Ben to believe Benjamin killed Kate. Before Ben gets into a rage Benjamin explains that Kate attacked him after Ben left and Benjamin locked himself in his room, he goes on to explain later that night he heard Ben’s car pull up outside and more arguing and then nothing – Benjamin then accuses Ben of killing. Ben doesn’t want to believe that he killed Kate and calls the police.
The police arrive and they are taken to the police station while a forensic team sets up at the house. Ben and Benjamin are interrogated by the police, they have conflicting stories. Later on the police determine there is not any physical evidence either of them killed Kate so they are released, but a watchful eye is on them.

Act III – Pub, Park, Kaitlin’s Flat

Benjamin just goes home to carry on life while Ben goes back to the pub to retrace his steps. A conversation between Ben and a barmaid goes along the lines of:
Ben: “What happened last night?”
Barmaid: “You don’t remember? You got absolutely hammered, you even smashed a pint and tried to clean up the glass by yourself! Did Kate bandage up your hand for you?”
Ben: “She… Was murdered last night… While I was here.”
Barmaid: “But she was here…”
Ben: “You must be mistaken, when I got back in the morning she was dead on the floor.”
Barmaid: “Well, you must be mistaken, I remember very clearly asking her about her tattoo.”
Ben: “Kate doesn’t have a tattoo…”
Ben realises that Kaitlin must have been the one with him that night.
(Side note: this shows another side to the clones becoming more human-like, Kate would have disregarded Kaitlin getting a tattoo as stupid and a waste of time. As Kaitlin was neglected by Kate, therefore forcing Kaitlin to think for herself to get through day to day life. The clone’s own decisions, while small, show humanity that would at first be ignored.)
Ben starts to think that Kaitlin may have killed Kate so he goes out to find her. On his way he passes through the park that he woke up in the previous day. He arrives at Kaitlin’s flat, and confronts her. The argument ends with Ben being knocked out and chained to a radiator in Kaitlin’s bathroom.

Act IV – House, Police Station

The next day Benjamin is sitting at home and starts to wonder where Ben is as he hasn’t been given anything to do. Benjamin thinks he should tell the police that Ben is missing (side note: clones wouldn’t normally worry and come to the conclusion something bad has happened, this shows Benjamin starting to grasp his humanity).
At the police station Benjamin explains this to the police who are shocked that a clone is worrying about the whereabouts of someone, around the world instances of clones becoming more human-like have been reported because of this protests have occurred for clones to been seen as people. Scientists have been looking into this ‘error’.
The police make the jump that if this is happening everywhere it is quite possible the same thing is happening to Kate’s clone, Kaitlin. The movie ends on them going off to find Kaitlin or Ben.

  1. Terrific planning with an imaginative concept and effective postmodern theme, well done. Target: Make sure the dialogue makes police assumptions clear.
